Archives: December 2009

Yesterday was our big day of travel: Phoenix to Memphis to Chicago was the plan. When we arrived to the Memphis airport (filled with its delicious BBQ scent) we learned that the previous two flights to Chicago had been cancelled and our 7:20 pm flight was thus rather overbooked. We were giddy for vouchers until we heard the “deal” a flight to Minneapolis and a connection to Chicago (maybe). Mmmmm, no thank you. But then, genius struck and we realized that there was a flight directly to our final Grand Rapids destination. So after one rush across the airport, a tiny airplane hour, and an unexpected airport pick up from my parents later, we were home early and with $900 in flight vouchers to boot!

Yeah for traveling with only carry-ons!

So we are back, but minus our car and winter things, which are still in Chicago. But Ryan will drive back to Chicago with my Aunt tomorrow and retrieve our car. (Without catching the subway and bus and late night slippery road drive back that we were dreading.)

So we are back and celebrating Christmas with my family this wintry Sunday. For our quotable Sunday, I bring you Riana’s words from yesterday’s travel and a few snapshots from our leftover smorgasbord.

1. In the airport upon meeting her first midget–

Riana: Why are you so short sir?

Midget: Why are you short?

Riana: ‘Cause I’m three!

2. Upon being woken up for landing in Grand Rapids

But Mama, I’m out of batteries.

3. Finally tucked in bed and rethinking the day that did not go we had previewed

So, how did we get here again? Do we have to go to ‘Cago (Chicago) to-later?

Merry and Bright

Author: Linnea

Christmas is time together; time with the ones who are dear.

Today is our last full day with family in Arizona and then

we will return to spend more days of merriment with family and friends in Michigan.

And yet, Christmas is also a time that can be melancholy for me,

when I think of the dear ones who are far away.

Love and blessings and good tidings to those far and near.

May you be full of warmth and light; merry and bright.

Christmas is waiting. It is in the quiet hours, the busy hours, the hours of dreaming and remembering, wishing and preparing, loving, and watching.

Merry Christmas in these final hours, ripe with expectation and hope. May your days be, as the song is sung, full of good cheer!

Christmas is books! Oh the wonderful books that come with the season!

Growing up, we anticipated these special friends who were brought out only during the month of December. I am pretty sure that we were not allowed to touch the books until we had helped decorate and then we would read and read and read through the month! Funny, being away from home at Christmas does not bother me much, but I do wish I could read some of these books with the girls tonight. In the meantime, I will just highlight a few of the good old favorites that I have enjoyed for many years.  Hope you are settling in to the holiday, slowing down the pace, and taking time to enjoy.

Christmas is egg nog, and other treats.
This week I’ve been treating myself to just a swig of egg nog in chai tea or coffee. You should try it, at least once.

And I suppose today will call for another hike to work off some of this nog. Or just to enjoy the change of scenery while we can.
