going-forward

It’s Sunday today, Amelia just turned 11 months old, and we need a day of rest…

So we took this day to cool our heels, rethink the projects and priorities, and to swim.

The girls have been so patient and fun through all of these last days and weeks,

but we needed to just play rather than play for moments in the line at a store or while driving to the next whatever.

Amelia, by the way, has reversed her previous decision to deeply dislike water (she went weeks without baths because I didn’t want to deal with the screams of terror!)

Today she went full throttle, crawling across the sand and right into the water.

Time and time again, she repeated her desire to sit.right.in.the.waves.

She must figure, she made it through teeth and water is not such a big thing in comparison.

Riana decided to mostly roll and play in the sand.

Then she was surprised, wondering how sand got all over her body…

But it was nothing a little ice cream couldn’t help fix.

Meanwhile, the big eleven monther was plum tired out from all that crawling and playing.

Yes, I think that we all needed this day of rest.

growth

Author: Linnea

A Friend gave us this Oak seedling, which he grew from

an acorn outside the old Quaker Meeting House in West Chester.

We were looking for a tree to plant and this one is about Riana’s same age. oak-dreamsSo we planted it, along with special dreams, wishes, notes, and things.  It was already November (2007)

and we feared that this was too late; that our little seedling might not last the winter. oak-year1 So tiny, can you find it in the picture?

Yet it took root and continued to grow.

Now it is one of those special things I wish we could take along wherever we go.

oak-year3-copyI did not think of trees growing so quickly.

Then again, I did not know how it would feel to have children growing before our eyes.

At least for now, she is willing to go wherever we go.

Home

Author: Linnea

Home is where the heart is…home is where you rest your head…away is good but home is best…as for me and my house… the sayings swirl through my head. Riana has been “playing house” a lot lately. I wonder if she knows that this is on my mind, or if it’s just the age, or maybe a little bit of both.

I’m still trying to reflect on my ever-bending ideas about having a house and things, making a home, etc. We have a house (and many many things) but sometimes it flusters me…I cannot concentrate, I become anxious, I want to give it all away. On other days I feel a longing for a home that is not yet here- a ‘rest of your life’ sort of perfection. So today (while making a pile to give-away) I watched Riana go through the rituals of playing house. It usually goes something like this:

R: I want you knock on my door
Me: knock knock
R: Hi! Welcome to my house. Come in!
Me: Oh thank you, it’s nice to see you.
Then I get the grand tour.

It seems that all houses need a place to sleep and food. Most also require a place to go to the bathroom and shoes. She wants to show off her shoe collection. (Remind you of anyone?)

On a recent trip to the arboretum, we got to talking about animal houses…eggs, nests, leaves, holes… I have a feeling we’ll be learning more about animal houses as the summer progresses.  And of course, we paused at structures and under trees just so we could play a little bit of house along the way.

Mothers Day

Happy Mothers' Day!

Happy Mothers' Day!

I am not generally a creature of habit, and I don’t always bother to honor traditions… that being said, we went to the arboretum today; Mothers Day.  Our first trip to this place was exactly two years ago.  Azaleas, on the other hand, are fairly predictable.  Just as they did two years ago, they filled the space with bright pink clouds of lovely.  Here we are, then and now: with our girls learning to walk and already knowing how to enjoy being outdoors.

Sisterly Secrets

Author: Linnea

Tell me sister, tell me true  Let me show how I love you…with those lines, I wrote a poem about my own sister waaay back in fourth grade.  These days, I love to watch Riana and Amelia interact.  Amelia has special laughs and noises just for her sister.  Riana likes to hold her sister’s hand in the car and during naps.  They laugh, they play, they snuggle.  I don’t know how to cultivate their sisterly relationships, but I sense that it has to do with letting them be themselves, letting them work through their relationship, and hoping that they don’t unlearn what they already share.  And maybe it has to do with reminding them about pictures like the one they didn’t know I was taking on a sunny morning a couple weeks ago.
