Dear Family,
I am currently sandwiched between 2 carseats as we all drive into downtown Traverse City. Last night, while dipping in the crystal clear Arbutus (bu as in beautiful) Lake, Ry decided he was biking so fast that he wasn’t enjoying the scenery, taking pictures, etc. So today, rather than a super difficult, hilly 80 miles, we are all driving to Old Mission Lighthouse and then driving toward Charlevoix. Here, the riders will pick up a trail (much better than roads) and meet us at Petosky State Park.

Now we are off to the farmers market to score fresh blueberries, cherries, bread, and hopefully coffee!

Happy trails,
Linnea

PS- here are a couple pictures from the Mission Point Lighthouse

The guys enjoyed a nice and easy, mostly trail ride into Petoskey. The town turned out to be quite cute, so we opted to visit the art fair and have dinner in town.

Dear Family,

Day 2: the guys took off just after 10. Unfortunately, I got a call about one hour later: Dan had a migraine. Anyone who gets migraines knows this meant Dan’s riding day was over. I decided to drive on to secure a campsite first and then returned to Lake Mitchell to get Dan.

The route today included a number of hills but Ry is making excellent time. I believe he left Dan around 12:45, took one wrong turn and should be to Lake Arbutus campground very soon, by 4:15.

Our site is right on this beautiful lake and the girls are itching to go swimming.

Signing out,
Linnea

Day 2- camping on Arbutus Lake near Traverse City

Day 1- taking off

Day one: 9am to 7pm, 106 miles. Dan joins Ryan in the Century Club! Sausages, potatoes, and smores ready!

After the guys left our house, I finished packing our car and we drove to Cadillac. There was rain on and off, but no big storms. Riana and Amelia were very helpful and we set up camp together. Then the girls went wading and we had snacks while waiting for the arrival. Success!!

Day 1- Camping on Lake Mitchell near Cadillac

After dinner, we walked along Lake Mitchell and enjoyed the sunset. Shortly thereafter, all fell asleep.

Currently, I write this with a view of the Mackinac Bridge, and I’m island-side. Goodness, I was not intending to take a blog break, but we got busy in the days leading up to our vacation, so here is a little recap.

1. Our house! When we left, the lead-paint siding was completely covered with house wrap and the work of siding/trim was starting. Ryan completed the necessary projects so the workers could move forward, we picked out the colors, and now we wait.

House in the works Red trim!

2. Speaking of Ryan, he used saved gift money to purchase a camcorder. We have some video projects underway and using the video feature on our point-and-shoot was not quite enough. He has also been working hard to get his photography website up and running. There are still some bugs in the store (such as adding different sizes of prints) but it’s getting there.

3. If house projects, a website, and video projects weren’t enough for July, Ryan has been training for a bike trip and planning another trip too. Day 1- stretching and getting ready

For organization’s sake, the next four posts will start with the dates from the 4-day bike trip that Ryan and my brother Dan have just completed. Some will be text from the emails I sent family members along the way. Stay tuned…

The intro. email to my family-

Dear Family,

Ryan and Dan are taking off on their big bike trip to Mackinaw City! The girls
and I will be meeting them each night with tents, food, and hugs too.
So here is the plan:

Thursday: bike (100 miles, mostly via the White Pine Trail) from our house to
Cadillac. Dan found it very important to do one “Century Ride,” which is 100
miles. So that will be day 1. We hope to camp at Hemlock Campground on Lake
Mitchell.

Friday: From Cadillac, they will head north to Traverse City (40 miles) where we
hope to camp at another no reservations place on a small lake, Arbutus No. 4.
State Forest Campground. For both Cadillac and TC, I also filed open-camping
permits for free state land camping if either campground is full. Since this
ride is relatively short, they hope to have time to see Old Mission Point
Lighthouse too.

Saturday: Traverse City to Petoskey (80 miles) . This is the day Ryan is most
concerned about as the terrain is very hilly and known to be windy. We have a
reservation for Petoskey State Park.

Sunday: Petoskey to Mackinaw City (40 miles, more if they diverge for scenery). This includes the Tunnel of Trees, which is a very scenic route. We will be meeting up with my family and sleeping in a hotel this evening, in preparation to boat to Mackinac Island on Monday morning.

On the Island- We will be staying in an area that is a 2 mile bike/horse ride from the
downtown, Stonecliffe. There is a big yacht race that we hope to see and plenty of other exploring to enjoy Monday through Thursday. After Thursday? We have a few more days off, but have not thought ahead to how we’ll fill them. Feel free to leave suggestions!

Dear Riana,

When you look back on today, your very first athletic competition, I hope you remember this feeling:

You wore your favorite red and green striped Christmas socks, your Mama’s blue bike gloves, and the biggest smile.  You also wore your serious bike face, which I also find adorable.  I told you we could go watch a kids bike race, but of course, you wanted to participate.  As your Mama, I want to protect you: from the heat, from bikes double your tire size, from potential spills and disappointment… but I also remembered our mantra: say yes! as often as possible.  So we said yes!  Papa will show you the video and maybe you will see the things this proud Mama sees: you were the only three or four year old without training wheels, you were focused and speedy, you pushed out past to the front with ease… When you got to the finish line, you were disappointed, though you were first.  You wanted to ride the entire course, like the big kids.  So we said yes! And you kept going, faster than I could run of course, until you made it back to the start.

Right now you are asleep upstairs with your medal in hand and I wonder just what you will remember from today or from other competitions.  But I hope, that win or lose, you will remember that with this pure smile, on this sunny day, you rode as fast as your could, and you had fun.
